YOUth can.

INITIATE. ACT. CHANGE.

What Type Are You?

Energetic. Ambitious. Full of life.

Words that exactly describe how it is and what it is like to be young. It is the stage when man is so full of energy, passion, drive and enthusiasm for life. In this stage, the youth are finally discovered as a potent force acknowledged by the society. Their energy can be channeled and used into a greater purpose for they can initiate, act and make a change not only for themselves but also to the society at large, if only guided into the right direction.

As what I have emphasized in my prior post, youth can be the “agents of change” by playing an active role, standing up and fighting against some serious global issues just like climate change. The youth can be a potent force in the society if only they move as one, pure of resolve and united in mind.

However, the youth can have varying personalities that affect the way they view, think about and interact with others and the society as a whole. They can use the strength and energy they have either for a positive or negative purpose depending on the type of personalities that they have.

In the book entitled, “Why Teenagers Act the Way they Do”, written by Dr. G. Keith Olson, he listed and defined some types of youth personalities:

1.)    Power-oriented

This type of personality loves to be perceived as someone who steps up and takes control of various situations. They also like to assert their authority over others and need to see their selves in control of the lives of others.  Their use of power may often be equated with its abuse however, if used properly; the power that they have can be used to produce good results and achieve important objectives.

2.)    Competitive

Youth with competitive personality views competition as the primary way of relating and interacting with others. They are often self-critical, have a high sense of urgency and are easily aroused to hostility especially if it got anything to do with delays, procrastination and unproductivity. They often strive toward goals without even feeling satisfied with their efforts and achievements. Despite this, being competitive seems to be beneficial at times for it gives a stronger motivation to achieve and accomplish more. Competitive people just get things done.

3.)    Aggressive

Young people with aggressive type of personality always almost feel like they are in constant war with anything that stands against the way of their persistent pursuit for their wants and desires. When they feel defeated, aggressive types don’t back down easily. They usually want to take someone else with them. They are the types that try to push others away from them as well as position themselves against others.

4.)    Rebellious

Similar to aggressive types, young people with rebellious type personality also attempts to drive others away and withdraw from social experience. However, the big difference between the two is that rebellious type is not interested in any kind of revenge.  The self-demeaning type of personality the rebellious has usually lacks confidence and belief in him/herself. He or she usually is a submissive type and practices passive withdrawal.

5.)    Dependent

The dependent type personality usually wants to rely on someone else who will take responsibility and adopt the leadership role. Dependent types tend to spend great effort trying to please others. They also display lack of self-confidence and self-doubt underestimating their abilities and capability to handle responsibility. Furthermore, they have a hard time making decisions by themselves and rarely disagree with others for fear of losing support or approval.

6.)    Conforming

The conforming-personality strives to reduce anxious feelings by being accepted and liked even at the expense of sacrificing too much of him/herself just to gain the others’ approval and acceptance. This type of personality is often viewed as responsible, which is close to the social ideal of being an adolescent. Furthermore, it is a combination of power-oriented and conforming personalities that follows through with commitments and respects authority.

You, what kind of personality do you have?

  1. I am actually a mix of the different types of personalities mentioned, but I think I’m more of conforming. I can be free and spontaneous with my friends around, but I don’t sacrifice so much only to gain others’ approval. I can also be dependent and aggressive at times, depending on the situation and the people I am dealing with.

  2. I think I belong to the dependent type of personality. 🙂 Thank you for this blog, Ate. Now I am aware that the youth really can change the society by using our abilities and personalities in a responsible way.

  3. Thank you for the comment, Len. You should know that we all have the ability and the capability to lead and so you don’t need to doubt yourself. Just think that if others can do it, you can also do it. Just be confident and believe in yourself. Go! You can do it!
